01/12/2025 - “MLK Tribute: Embracing Peace, The Transformative Power of Faith”
Sunday Service Speaker: Rev. Jeannette B. Gatewood-Johnson
SCRIPTURE:
Matthew 5:43–48
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? (NRSV)
BULLETIN POINTS:
1. King used this verse in many sermons. His core message was “Loving Your Enemies” and he emphasized that hate only intensifies hate and evil.
2. The foundation and implementation for peace was his life-long mission: Faith acts as the foundation for achieving peace, by providing a sense of security and hope that could alleviate anxiety and worry in all situations.
3. He combined correlations of Peace with Spiritual faith by reminding us of the value in embracing peace and witnessing the transformative power of faith, as portrayed in the scripture from 1 John 4:20 (NIV)
“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 1 John 4:20 (NIV)
